چکیده

This paper identifies some of the determinants of individual mobility in the wage distribution over time. The proposed model takes attrition as well as the decile of origin into account unlike all other used models to describe the wage mobility. A simpel probit analysis is compared with the more sofisticated method used in this paper. Even though the wage distribution in Denmark has been nearly constant in the latest decade, this masks a very high individual wage mobility where less than 20% remain in the lowest deciles for more than 4 years. Human capital variables such as education and experience are important determinants of the position in the wage distribution, and upward wage mobility is found to be associated with less unemployment, less experience and the absense of changes in occupation and industry. On the other hand, unemployment is the single most important obstacle to upward mobility. These findings have a clear consequence for policies concerning minimum wage setting and job creation. The conclusion is that it is important to be employed even at a low wage in order to get better employment possibilities later, and that the risk of remaining in low wage jobs is small.

State dependence and wage dynamics: a heterogeneous Markov chain model for wage mobility in Austria

The behaviour of individual movements in the wage distribution over time can be described by a Markov process. To investigate wage mobility in terms of transitions between quintiles in the wage distribution we apply a xed e ects panel estimation method suggested by Honor e and Kyriazidou (2000). This method of mobility measurement is robust to data contamination like all methods that treat frac...

Wage Risk, On-the-job Search and Partial Insurance

This paper contributes to the growing literature on modeling individual wage dynamics. I build and estimate an error component model of wage process jointly with a structural life-cycle model of job mobility in an economy with search friction and job-switching cost. Besides separating shocks by their persistence, I distinguish two sources of wage shocks: shocks at worker-firm level and shocks a...

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data We estimate wage and job tenure functions that include individual and firm effects capturing time-invariant unobserved worker and firm heterogeneity using German linked employeremployee data (LIAB data set). We find that both types of heterogeneity are correlated to the ...

Career Progression: Getting-On, Getting-By and Going Nowhere

This research examines factors that help or hinder the ‘career progress’ of individuals in NCDS through the labour market. We employ different measures of an individual’s status based on earnings. To a large extent this paper is an empirical implementation of the Sicherman and Galor model of Career Mobility (Journal of Political Economy 1990) in that this paper attempts to chart exactly how peo...
